Vesničko má středisková

After a long hiatus here was a Czech film once again to make a "breakthrough" from behind the Iron Curtain right to the Academy Award ceremony. Even though this time out Jiří Menzel´s second nomination failed to deliver the coveted statuette, he did turn out a sweet comedy that scored a good deal of success on the international circuit as well. It tells several parallel stories about down-to-earth rural characters, inhabitants of a village where all disputes are eventually settled by the sagacious local doctor whose sole weakness seems to be the obvious preference he gives to admiring the beauties of the surrounding countryside, over minding the wheel of his car. The film´s script was supplied by Zdeněk Svěrák, through the last few decades one of the most prominent figures of Czech cinema.
