Slavnosti sněženek

A small but by no means unremarkable place, Kersko lies on the road between Prague and the health resort of Poděbrady in central Bohemia. It was there in fact that the writer Bohumil Hrabal used to spend a good deal of time, keeping a large family of cats and drawing inspiration on the life of the closely-knit neighbourhood. The source of inspiration was once again seized here by film-maker Jiří Menzel. This is a story set in the woodland community´s peculiar scenery peopled by a plethora of down-to-earth characters, including notably a dreamer who amuses and bemuses his friends by his passion for seeking out and purchasing all kinds of seemingly worthless bric-a-brac, for the sole purpose of salvaging the items from being thrown away. The story´s kaleidoscope of small-time, humorous conflicts makes a pleasant, easy watching - albeit not devoid of a "philosophical" dimension - all along the plot´s collision course towards a climax in the form of a hunters? banquet.
