Rozmarné léto
A charming comedy which was premiered a mere two months before the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. A trio of friends stuck in a sleepy small health resort town spend their time philosophizing, trying to come to grips with the season´s fickle weather as well as, quite importantly as it turns out, with the arrival of a travelling magician and his fair assistant. Director Jiří Menzel, who cast himself as the ambulant entertainer, faithfully recreated the miniature world of a country swimming-pool, and the upheaval caused to the dormant mood of the place and its inhabitants by the young girl´s luscious good looks. The Capricious Summer´s subdued sensuousness comes across as the projection of a screen aesthetic mastered to perfection.
