Obchod na korze
The first Czech movie to have won the Academy Award ("Oscar") in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Its story, set in a small town in Slovakia during World War II, where Nazis and their local stooges divide up Jewish property, offers a sensitive study of human character in an extreme situation. The impact of the drama´s tragi-comic, its ostentation-free message is enhanced by the impeccable performance of its two protagonists - Ida Kaminska as an old Jewish widow, and Jozef Króner as pliant and frightened, yet inherently warm-hearted executor of the Nazi-enforced Aryan (expropriation) decrees.
